Portfolio: Good Things Come in Small Packages

This little house in Cuyahoga Falls was getting too small to hold two adults, two teenagers, two cats, six birds, and a tank full of fish. But it had been built by the homeowner’s father, so the family had a strong sentimental attachment to the house.

We more than doubled the square footage of the house, adding a family room with a new master bedroom above. Careful design allowed us to access the new master from the existing half-story space, despite the limited amount of headroom. And an old-fashioned cellar door gives access to new basement space for storage; something the slab-on-grade house had lacked before.

It’s still a small house by most standards, but now this little house is more charming than ever, with room for the whole family.

The results of the renovation include:

  • Doubled size of existing house
  • Family room addition
  • Visual connection from kitchen to family room
  • Master bedroom on second floor
  • New basement space below
  • Space for boots and coats at new family entry door
  • Fish-scale siding accents
  • New front entry porch
