Portfolio: Room to Celebrate

Jen and Jeff enjoy having their house serve as the center of activities for family celebrations, and the gatherings just keep getting bigger as their older children extend their family. As a result, the Kitchen layout in their house started to seem more cramped than it once did. And there were things the Kitchen never really did very well…

It didn’t take advantage of the views from their back yard, which adjoins a neighborhood park, and cooking out in the summer was difficult because there was no easy way to get from the Kitchen to the deck. But they weren’t sure how they could add to the house. The location of their existing Family Room and the hipped roofs on the house made it difficult to add in a way that was attractive and didn’t result in roof valleys that would invite leaks. Their contractor encouraged them to contact an architect to work through these problems.

Our design for their house:

  • Shapes the addition to complement the gable of the existing Family Room roof
  • Includes a Hearth Room with a fireplace that ties the two gables together
  • Has a cathedral ceiling in the Breakfast area for lots of natural light
  • Provides views of the backyard from both the Kitchen and the Breakfast area
  • Allows access directly from the Kitchen to the backyard grill
  • Provides lots of room for family, whether they are helping with the cooking or just enjoying each other’s company
